How Toxic People Can Affect Your Mental Health

Mental Health

It can be really hard to stay healthy and happy if you’re surrounding yourself with toxic people. Toxic people can be anything from co-workers, friends, family, or significant others. Toxicity can be hard to cope with especially if you can’t recognize a toxic person. A toxic person can control your life entirely without you even realizing it. So what exactly is a toxic person? A toxic person is anyone who affects your mental health, happiness, and well-being negatively.

Traits of a toxic person:

  • They are always easily controlling or jealous if they’re in a relationship with you.
  • There is nothing ever said nice about you by them.
  • They make you feel small and inadequate.
  • It’s always about them. They only want to talk to you when they need something.
  • They don’t try to change when confronted.

The list goes on and on my friend but those are just a few examples.

1. You’ll begin to feel drained.

Dealing with a toxic person is draining and eventually, you’ll reach your breaking point. Having energy and feeling alive is part of being healthy but when you’re dealing with a toxic person, it’s the other way around. Mental exhaustion will soon become part of your life.

2. You’ll feel like there’s no escape.

Once you recognize that you’re dealing with a toxic person, yes, you may have come to your senses, but leaving won’t be as easy as you think. If the toxic person is close to you, or a relative, you will more than likely feel like there is no escape. When you care for someone, you open up your heart to them. That’s normal and completely understandable. And if you are a good person, you will go the extra mile for others and don’t mind it. I am the same way. But it becomes a problem when you are good to someone who isn’t good to you in return.

3. You will lose yourself.

This is the part that hurts the most to talk about because this has happened to me before because of a toxic person. Trust me, it can happen. You can even create self-destructive habits and not even know it. Toxicity is mind-damaging and I think more people should be aware of it. In my case, my ex-boyfriend was toxic. I made plenty of excuses for him and I even started to believe them myself. I noticed that I was stressed out almost every day to where I assumed it was a part of life to feel that way. Something like being immune to it. It affected my mental health in ways I couldn’t even deal with. I don’t wish toxicity on anyone.

Free yourself from the negativity

You can be blinded by several things such as love, money, looks, etc.

Don’t allow a person to cause ongoing emotional stress in your life, to where you are left mentally exhausted. If you are used to this kind of lifestyle, then it means you are already blinded by it. And this shouldn’t be the case. This can affect your mental health tremendously and that is not okay.

Everyone deserves to be happy

I don’t care if it’s family or not, dismiss a toxic person from your life permanently. History doesn’t matter, their broken childhood doesn’t matter, what they’ve done for you in the past doesn’t matter, etc. What does matter? You. You and your mental health matter. Know your worth and don’t put up with toxicity anymore. You deserve better.

Bring peace to your life

What you allow will continue. Take care of yourself and allow yourself to gain peace again.

Love yourself enough to remove ALL negativity and toxicity from your life and choose to be happy. Genuinely happy, that is. Everyone deserves to be happy, including you! Removing toxic people from your life will gradually create peace in your life and you will get to see what it feels like.

We have to take care of our mental health. If someone triggers your anxiety, even the slightest… They don’t need to be around you. If someone causes you to feel uncomfortable or make you cry often, they don’t need to be around you either. Anything that causes you stress or affects your well-being needs to be removed.

To experience true happiness, these changes have to be made.

When I tell you, that the feeling is very rewarding. It is. It’s almost like feeling freed from something if you know what I mean. Once you finally cut that toxic person off, you will find peace. You’ll get your glow back, you’ll see your worth, and you’ll never let anyone treat you like that ever again. You’ll be wiser and you’ll see the signs before anyone gets close to making you their victim again.
